Jess Debenham is a singer, songwriter and passionate worshipper based in Brighton.

Jess enjoys a cup of tea, musicals, and a good ol’ DMC (deep meaningful chat). Above all, she loves Jesus her gracious, mighty Saviour and is passionate about His Church.

Jess wants to create for the Creator, to present the consistent and powerful truths of the gospel and the glory of God’s nature with fresh perspective. Jess’ songwriting encompasses themes of closeness with God, His divine holiness, and His never ending grace. Through lyrics that portray the Jesus of the Bible clearly, the wonders of His character, and the excitement of His coming, she hopes to inspire people in their relationships with God, and the mission of living their everyday lives in His light. 

Having experienced a season of God revealing his truth in the face of lies - about His character, and herself - Jess hopes to share the journey of truly understanding and accepting grace with every listener and worshipper. Her prayer is for them to know the depth of God’s faithfulness, and the freedom that He has for them. Jess’ heart for ministry is to empower members of the Church to walk with God as they surrender their lives to Jesus with gladness.

Some songs you write because you need to sing them - to remind your own soul of the truth. Like Psalms of Lament, they help us express our deepest places to God as a sung prayer. This song came about processing a season of frustration and disappointment with a couple of dear friends. It is journey from raw honest despair to the igniting of renewed hope and musically expresses that with a brooding tone and a building intensity.

Our prayer is that this song meets people in the painful place of Waiting and lifts their eyes again to see that God is close to the broken hearted and hears our cries to him.

The Waiting

In the past year, Jess has been crafting her debut album, "MUCH BETTER", inspired by her story of freedom from legalism and people-pleasing through the revelation of God's grace. This album reflects her journey, with the prayer that the Spirit will bring deeper revelation of God - Father, Son, Spirit - to listeners' and singers hearts. Recorded live on February 24th 2024 and released March 28th 2025, it captures the essence of collective worship.

Thank you to all of those who generously partnered with Jess with prayer and financial support to enable this album to happen. The whole project is a joyous culmination of teamwork (the family of God!) creating together as an expression of worship to our wonderful Saviour.

Ultimately, all thanks and praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ who has called us from darkness into His glorious light and has provided all things that pertain to life and godliness. To Him be glory forever and ever.

So here is: • the demo I sent Luke for him to work on • the demo Luke sent me It was not what I imagined when I sent off the demo but it strengthened the song for the better 🤩 I love the grit that it has to it. I was SO excited when I listened to what Luke had been playing around with! Team is the best!! I was listening to a podcast from the Helsers and God spoke to me through it. I am a very feeling person (on the personality tests I’m 93% feeling). And I can find my emotions frustrating and am not very patient with myself when I feel. During this podcast i was reminded, I can come to Jesus as I am. In all the feels and when I haven’t even figured out what I’m feeling. And even the ugly, not-so-nice feelings. I can come to Jesus in it all. He loves to meet me in my weakness. He is not thrown by my emotions and wants to be with me in it and help me process it all with Him. I think they may have even used the phrase/a phrase along the lines of Jesus camps in our weakest places. It stuck. I’m still growing and still learning to come to Jesus and not polish myself up or figure out what is going on before coming to him. Let me encourage you, come to Jesus. Let Him be your first point of call, your first response. He loves to sit with you through it, He is compassionate, the closest of friends and the most attentive, patient and loving Father with boundless amounts of grace and mercy. #worshipper #jesus #newchristianmusic #songwriter #worship

In His grace, He has promised to make us more into the likeness of Christ so whether I pray it or not, He will be working. But, this is the prayer of joining in: “Okay, I want that too.” Refining can tend to involve pressure and heat, but I know that my Father is love and being shaped more and more into the likeness of Christ is the best thing for me. There is no one else’s hands I would rather be in. I won’t be complete here on earth but when I get to Heaven, or when Christ returns, and I see Christ face to face it will finally be completed and I will be like Him for I will see Him as He is. “all I have is given from You, so I’m giving it back to You” Like Abraham who was called to lay down his promised, miracle-son, we are called to lay down all of ourselves, even the gifts God has given us, at His feet. 🦶 It’s hard. I know because I’ve done it - and will continue to do it. But the promise is that as we lose our lives for Jesus’ sake we will find it. And I know that too. I have found that to be true. He is worth it. My encouragement to you, if you are struggling to surrender something to Jesus, is to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal more of Jesus and the Father’s heart to you. When you see how beautiful, good, and generous He is, surrendering everything to Him will be the only appropriate response and something, though still hard, you want to do. And sometimes it’s not a one-moment thing, sometimes (personally, I’ve found a lot of times!) we need to lay it down again and again. Continually choosing Jesus. And genuinely, when I lay things down at His feet I find life! I’m actually filled with much more joy, peace, freedom, and LIFE(!) than I am when I cling onto things with a tight-fisted, anxious grip. The other side of surrender to Christ is life.
